It is possible to hand-code in a tool like Dreamweaver ... and it actually speeds up the process.

Funny. When dreamweaver came out 3.0 v. I used it cause i didnt know how to hand type HTML. Now i still use it to make work faster. sure, i CAN hand code if i wanted to. but sure you COULD WALK to work everyday instead of driving, but majority chooses? yeah, anything but handcoding. dreamweaver has now become adobe and is a sucker sale. industry standard, must have. even if you dont use it.

Micorsoft is coming up with a large number of webbased tools, has anyone tried Expressions web? it looks good to me..i had attended its launch in india...

You can keep both programs, I use notepad++ only. basic code highlighting is all I really need.

sorry, but just cause i can hand code in notepad, doesn't mean i still can't take advantage of the shortcuts and terrific features of Dreamweaver.

Though in my opinion not as powerful as UltraEdit it is much better for beginners.

As most people I have a collection of tools. I'll list them in order of use.
1.Dreamweaver CS4
2.Textpad and Notepad++ and HomeSite5 (depends on my mood and what I'm doing)
2.A few coffee cup programs like the flash form builder, it's just quick, clean, and easy.
I did use NVU for good while when I only used linux but now I like dreamweaver better.
As for ftp'ing I'm not fond of built in clients so I use filezilla and fireftp add-on for firefox.
As for frontpage I don't know where to start. My first freelance job was to update someones site that was built with frontpage. OMG the directory was so packed with garbage. So I talked the client into paying me to rebuild the whole site and get rid of all the unnecessary junk. The site was 100% better in every way after that.
Here's another funny one. My wife is currently in school finishing up her masters and is taking a technology class. Her teacher who possesses a doctorate in technology sent my wife home saying that publisher is the best web design software ever made and that she's a master designer. I told her to tell her teacher to send me a link of a site she made with publisher. She did and I pretty much replied back with a question. You have a doctorate degree in technology?

I like DreamWeaver, but will also use Notepad++ when I want something a bit more bare bones. Basically it's Notepad but specifically for coding.
I really dislike pure (or too close to being pure) WYSIWYG editors, there's only so much you can do without getting into the guts of web-design.
I use code view and design view in tandem in DreamWeaver a lot.
Good WYSIWYG editors can be a great tool to aid in web design, but I don't think they are very good when used just all on their own. That DreamWeaver allows for both WYSIWYG and coding is what I like about it.
