First web design - constructive criticism welcome

Its difficult to visualize the site live from a static image, it looks as though some of the text will be kind of big. Is kubix the site name? If so the site name and the product name (soma cube) look pretty similar.

Great colours, I like the animation with the kid in the plane. Its subtle but effective.

    Feedback please

It scales nicely, I didn't try it on a mobile device but I'm guessing its been built to fit down to their different sizes.

Please tell me what I am not seeing

There is a lot of white, a simple background colour or image would help. I agree that the header image is a bit dull, something brighter could help a lot. Overall its looking good and flows nicely.

    transparency issue

Remember you can use transparency with a gif. It'll be supported by older browsers (ie6) with this method. You can use the !important; on your style sheet and use both.

    Suggestions and feedback please!

The design suits your business well, clean and business like. It could perhaps benefit from a flash of a stronger colour for emphasis. The contrast between the man body and footer colours is a little close.

how do i save just the image part illustrator

Make sure its only the button on the workspace, delete any unwanted paths or element. Assuming its a button for a website go to save for web and devices. You can set the size you need there, with vectors its irrelevant the size you work in as it can be scaled at this stage.

    Wacom Tablets

    Newbie needs help!

Try taking the images that have been sliced up and lay it out with CSS, that's more how a web designer would do it. Most of us started off trying to build a website in PhotoShop, it just doesn't work though.

What modern web designing techniques must I be familiar with to make a living?

Its best to decide if you want to be a front end or back end developer, not many people do both well. HTML, CSS and Jquery are the tools I use daily, all my backend functionality is .NET.

Web Designers: School or Self Taught?

Nothing beats experience, try doing some website designs for free to build up your portfolio. You could then try and get some work experience in a web design studio. An employer would look more favorably on somebody that can do the job rather than someone with just qualifications.

    web design, need comments

I'd like to see you second version, the darker design, with some textures. There are some great free resources with high res metal and natural textures which can bring a design alive.
