Best Web Design Software

Everyone seems to hate frontpage, whilst Macromedia dreamweaver seems to be the most popular choice out there. Anyone tried any other options?

I doubt you'd like it... it's confusing at first. I like it because you can do everything from the keyboard, and it has some nice search/replace stuff.

There are plenty of text editors better than Notepad... the good ones autoindent for you, and colour your code.

Notepad comes in handy cause there are times when you want an editor which does absolutely nothing with the code. I use notepad all the time when I have to change certain parts of files.
But Im not one of those people who could build a site using notepad.

First thing I do on a Windows computer is add a link to Notepad.exe in my "Send To" folder...

I thought the poll was intended for WYSIWYG editors, so I chose Dreamweaver.

But if we're talking about editors in general, then EditPlus is the best I tried VIM but I don't like it, what advanced features does it have (say, over EditPlus)? Just that everything is from the keyboard?

One thing I wish EditPlus had was folding (where you can collapse areas of code), I think VIM has that.

I don't think vim can do that, but Kedit can...

I keep learning how to do things in vim, then forgetting it when I don't use it for months. I generally just hit "%" to go to the closing bracket/brace/paranthesis of the current bit of code... it keeps it easy for my simple mind.

Whenever I'm in Linux and don't have my favorite Nano installed, I usually screw up configs with vim because I don't know how to work it. I could have sworn 'i' mean you go into insert move, but things go all crazy!

I used adobe go-live for some sites, but that was before I tried dreamweaver. as for text I just use notepad.

There are a couple things that I just cannot live withouth:

• Syntax highlighting - When looking at 2000 lines of code, a bunch of black text can get your mind loosing focus!
• Space-tabs: I hate using the tab character (especially the tab in notepad that takes up 8 spaces)
• function list: When you have a big library or class full of files, it's nice to have a list of functions where you can just double click it and be taken to it's source
• Line markers: When working on numerous files at once, you can quickly loose track of where you want to be
• Multi-files: You have to be able to open more then one file at once, and I can't stand to have all different windows open in the status bar
• Auto-indent: Just makes life easier when you don't have to press tab 4 times whenever you need to insert a new line
• Quote/brace/bracket highlighting: When you're working with huge chunks of code, it's nice to see which brace is matching where

i think we all used frontpage express at some point when we first started, but honestly... frontpage is the devil!

i use dreamweaver for both layouts and coding.

I used some program I got at the Office Depot when I was first getting into web design. In fact, that was the first time I ever even experimented with making web pages.

I couldn't understand it in the first 5 minutes, so I gave up

lol... that's funny, one of mine did the same. he was also the head of department at that time. i hope for the sake of that school that he retired by now!

this guy also crashed my server in the NT4 server class i had to take. this happened one week before end of the class and of course he didn't grade me on my work yet. so that gave me one work to redo everything we had done thru out the semester and i still managed to get a B.

I used frontpage for a while and swore allegiance to it for a bit longer than I should have because I liked the way it was easy to do tables.

i can never understand fp/.. never got around to it, as found it tooo complicated for my taste... {read complicated, not complexed!}

anyways, I'd like to learn flash but its a bit too complexed for my mind {since I live out of the in-time, and can't seem to figure the timeline thingy}, so that leaves me for really simple wysiwyg stuff like ulead or someother - adobe...
