when to put adsense on

IF the ads are well placed and not too too over the top and in your face, then it should not really discourage sites from linking to you.
If you go overboard though, potential site partners may see your site as spam like as opposed to genuine content.

what ian said is good advice. Also the more ads you put on each page, the less you can potentially make from each click. Say if you put one ad block with 4 ads on one page, all four ads will be the highest paying for those keywords, but if you put 3 adblocks with 4 ads each (12 ads) the last 8 will pay less CPC. You may also do well to search for "adsense smartpricing" the basics of this is that a poor performing site can weigh down and decrease CPC on better performing sites on the same adsense account.
