When To Abandon The Pursuit of A Keyphrase

I've been pursuing a keyphrase that started out at around 150,000 results in google. I look today and it's now 650,000 results in google and each day I look, it keeps growing. Is this a signal that I should probably abandon trying to optimize for this keyphrase?

I'd probably find something that was a bit more focused. It's certainly alright to stay with what you have just add some more relevent keywords here and there and maybe add more informational pages.

F**k the keyword phrase, concentrate on having page content people actually want to read, we are not all computers!!!

If the key word is right for your website then don't give up on it. If it is a competitive keyword then it is worth fighting for.

Is there anyway this key phrase can be incorporated into more specific and relevant to your website long-tail search terms that it will be easier for you to rank for. How long have you been optimizing for this phrase and where are you currently ranking?
