What makes a good portfolio to showcase web design work?

something simple and not as spectacular as the webdesign your showing on your site so the focus becomes on the portfolio it self and not the design

quiet simply well designed sites within the portfolio, that load fast.
If you do have a portfolio page, it is good to do a case study for that partucular site, showing and detailing all of the work that went into it, areas that go beyond the site design, that way people know that you put a lot of work and effort into each site that you create.

People look at the website, so a well designed website would make visitors click another link on your website.

Next, they'll find the designs which you'll be showing off. You should have good designed websites to show off, so that people would actually hire you for a website design job.

For the portfolio page, I would definitely use a very nice image gallery that allows the visitor to see pictures of the sites up close, while also allowing them to visit the actual sites without problem.

TiltViewer Pro (worth the money) does this rather nicely.
