What is RSS?

What can you tell me about RSS and RSS feed? Here is what I understand about it. It is an XML representation of a web site. It is basically XML data.

I think a web browser can be configured to display the RSS in a manner such that a visitor to your web site can understand it contents.

Am I right?

Are there desktop applications that can read RSS feed and display them?

RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary feed) provides summaries of web content in a simple format. It is available through an RSS feed reader, or through some browsers.

Couldn't have said it better myself. If I may add, RSS feeds (from other sites) are also incredibly easy to add to a section of your own site. I recall developing iPhone Apps that would just display RSS feeds regarding free drinks and drink-specials in the NYC area. I can't give out the name as I'm under an NDA.
