What do you get when someone says "Cloud Hosting"?

Hello,

The questions is in the title of this thread. What kind of technology do you think about, when someone says Cloud?

Do you think of just a VPS which is easy to scale up and down or you think of high availability, load-balancing, etc.?

It's a good question because there is a big difference between a VPS and cloud hosting. Cloud hosting is where you have resources spread across a large pool of hardware, with your disk storage on a separate SAN. By using this kind of infrastructure you can achieve very high levels of resilience.
A VPS is typically a server with local disk storage that uses a linux hypervisor to split the machine into several virtual machines. It's a world away from a enterprise cloud hosting environment.

Cloud hosting, also known as cloud web hosting, is backed by large clouds of computing devices or a cluster of servers, supplies hosting resources. With a cloud host, you only pay what you use and never have to worry about how this cloud stuff is accomplished in the back stage.
