Website specifications

It's surprising the number of clients that think it's our job to create a specification. In effect they think it's up to us to write down what they want instead of them writing down what they want.

I've posted an article here which should help those potential clients to write down their requirements.

The gist of it is provide:
  • Background info
  • Objectives
  • Target audience
  • Competitors
  • Management plan
  • Content strategy
  • Functionality
  • Device and browser support required
  • Likes and dislikes
  • Timescales
  • Post launch marketing required
  • Budget range
  • Decision timeline

Cheers

I've invariably found the problem is that they don't actually know what they want until they get it and realise that's not they wanted in the first place.

The other one I find is that they expect you to make changes free of charge. Many assume that they paid for the site, so it entitles them to free updates. Or completely changing the site saying they never liked it.

Well, I'm sure the decorators they use will come back and change the wall paper when they decide they don't like it :)
