Very interested in learning how to design and develop websites.

From your experience what are the best set of books or training videos (up to date) out there to get you to an advanced level?

It can be confusing following random links to tutorials, so following a project style structure or listing books in a specific order to follow can be more helpful.

Total training could help you. They have many web design - related tutorials. Pay them a visit at www.totaltraining.com.
You can get a free 7-day pass to see the first chapter from each training they have and then if you want you can purchase that training (if available as dvd), or with 200 bucks per year i think (or something like that) you can have a full subscription and see their entire tutorials, no matter how many.

All their videos are in .mov format (quicktime) so you may need that applications and you'll also need adobe flash. They are all in high definition, at a powerful and high quality compression.
