Hi all,
I work for a private lending company. We're launching a website to try and get customers directly rather than through various referral sources. Our website developers are "SEO experts", and they're telling me that in order to get our site to the top of the search list we need to repeat, repeat, repeat... basically say the same thing over and over again. The problem I'm running into is the site now sounds very 'budget' and not that professional because we're constantly repeating ourselves. What's the point of having a site that's at the top of the search page if the actual site sucks? Does anyone know how valid the SEO repeat phrasing is? Are my website developers taking me for a ride, or is it really an effective way to do SEO?

Thanks for the help

Repeating keywords or keyphrases won't help you get good ranking. Google hates spamming. Just write your content naturally and build relevant and quality links for the site.

The site first and foremost must be designed and developed for the user - not SEO! So unfortunatetly the fact that your developers have no other advice other than to change and simplify your content means they may not be "SEO experts."

Furthermore, in accordance with the above point, Ishie wrote "Repeating keywords or keyphrases won't help you get good ranking. Google hates spamming." - This is extremely true and will be to the detriment of your site if its performed in excess! simple!

I can see though where your frustrations lie, as here you have this professional website which you want to rank well, however are told that the site cant be professional inorder to achieve that ranking! There are options available.

Of course though, they involve the changing of your "SEO experts" with developers who do specialise in the field.

From there, they can help direct you with firstly, with the APPROPRIATE keyword and keyphrase selections. Theres no point repeating and repeating a keyword if it is used too many times by too many websites! Followed by their appropriate implementation within your site with correct usage percentages to normal words and reference in meta tags.

Furthermore, a revamp of the site might be inorder to increase the amount of internal links that you have as well as the links with are in fact keywords or phrases.

Having said this, there are many other steps which must be performed as well in order to have a site optimised for a search engine. If you like, you can email our company at [email protected] with any further questions you may have and i will gladly try to answer then as best i can.

Please heed this warning also, do not under any circumstances let them convince you that a pay-per-click or paid Adwords campaign will pay dividends at the minute. These campaigns only work best in conjunction with a solid ORGANIC PageRank, not to mention that 65% of people never click on paid or sponsored results!!

Ishie is correct. Just blasting your page with a keyword phrase is not guaranteed to give you great ranking. Plus like you stated, it makes your website sound very unprofessional. Build quality (interesting) content with keywords in mind. Using them in anchor tags, headings, page titles, etc.
Be sure to use your Meta tags--keywords and description. Description be the more important one.
Having reputable sites linking in to your site will also help improve your ranking. If Google see that a well known/trusted site (seed site, site with high page rank) is linking to yours then you gain some status by association.

I would look into Natural Search Optimization

Keyword selection is also every important and can be a little tricky sometimes. the best keyword has a low competition level but high search volume.

Take a look a the Google Keyword Tool. It allows you to check the competition level and average search volumes of your keywords. This lets you know if many other sites are competing for the same keyword(s) and gives you an idea of its demand. This tool will also provide you will alternatives, best part, it's free. :D

Keyword selection and keyword density are very very important. Hence select your keywords very wisely. Also make sure you make use of the google keyword tool.

Dont forget to search for google keyword density tools that would save you from being a spammer in SE eyes and using the right keyword density.

Repeating keywords is a bad idea. Nonetheless, you should add a lot of content to your site to increase it's PR and authority. You cannot get many link exchanges with no PR. In addition, authority sites will more than likely rank better than other sites.

Keyword research is an important part of any SEO campaign. You should choose your keywords wisely. It should be based on search volume and competitiveness.
