If I have two websites with similar content but different domains, and I include a link on each site to the other site, what is the effect on the overall SEO?

Search engines usually pick up on reciprocal links, they will add to your ranking but not as much as a one way link.

I have to agree. I still prefer using one way links to build a good reputation. ;)

You could use your own blog site as a reciprocal link if you have one.

Reciprocal links are believed to have lost some effectiveness compared with a few years ago, when even a few link exchanging would help getting top ranks in highly competitive niches online. There is also another issue to mention in here and that is about the IP addresses of the links. For example, if your two websites are connected to each other and they are running on a single web hosting account, the IP addresses of those links would be the same and their effects would get even lowered more.

It is generally believed that one-way links are the best choices today webmasters can use to improve their websites rankings. You can find forums, blogs, social bookmarking sites as well as directories covering tips and bits of news about subject your website has already targeted and naturally, they could act as link building projects to use. If your niche is very competitive, you may need to get in touch with companies to build links for your site and submitting articles too can be among useful options.

No no no. On one our servers which caters our clients in the entertainment world, artists and agent cross link to each others pages as much as they like and it does absolutely no "harm" to them at all.

It is the SCALE of "cross-linking" that causes problems, two sites, five sites etc. will make no difference at all, start cross link several HUNDRED and you will probably step over the line.
