I was mainly wondering what people thought about having a background.

Definately with the background. Softer on the eyes. Nice design too. Impact statement right in the middle to get your "page-purpose" known right away.
You cover a lot on the first page but it doesn't look crowded and it's pretty well organized. The blue background gives it more comfort than 'burning-bright-white'.

Not really much of a difference between the two pages, but I would definitely go with the blue background.

i didnt see much of a difference at all but since every one else said blue i will be a lemming follow id go blue! little extra color never hurt.
