Making DIV automatically hold content

I thought "height: auto;" was the way to cause a DIV to expand to hold all of the text, images and other DIV's inside but I'm having trouble with a DIV right now. Is "height: auto;" the right setting to make the DIV snap to hold everything?

If there are floated elements inside the div, it will collapse. Clear your floats.

If the height (or width) of the element is constrained by a parent element, it will have scrollbars for viewing the overflowing content.
