website I am hoping to make much better is EssexPortal.co.uk

It is a Wordpress site and I am currently using a magazine theme. I like the theme - it is clean and simple. But, need to give the design something - a bit of razzle dazzle, as William "Billy" Flynn would say.

The logo was designed by a friend and I wish to maintain that colour, so not looking for a totally different design.

So, what do you think?

Id suggest looking for a content slider plugin with some nice images and blurbs of current posts. Id also suggest bringing the font size down a little, its the first thing I noticed. Also, maybe add some texture and some kind of image in the header

Yes, I agree with BradT81, the font of some of your headings is far too large. I would suggest having a sub menu at the very bottom of the page. For me having "privacy & cookis","advertise","contact"... etc does not look normal under your main heading menu. Maybe its just me.

Actually having the "Use of cookies" prominent is part of complying with the "EU Cookie directive"
