Long list of options or collapsible sub-menus in left navigation bar?

Does anybody have any opinions about or know of any research to support which is better in a left navigation bar - collapsible sub-menus or a long list of options like on the ebay homepage?

I'd be grateful to hear any opinions about this.

I would stick to the top collapsible menus and the complete links lists and buttons if placed on the left like ebay as you have mentioned.

Thanks for that.

What we've got at the moment is the top bar with 'home page', 'about us', 'how we work', 'estimates', 'work for us' and 'terms and conditions' buttons and on the left we have a number of collapsible menus for various categories of service.

I don't think the top bar is under discussion at the moment. Basically, management is trying to decide whether they want a long list of individual services on the left or to stick to the collapsible category menus as at present.
