Large Image Compression

Hi All,
A client of mine would like very large images on their website - they now unstand the compromises involved - web page load versus image quality.

Does anyone know good techniques to maximise image compression with minimal impact on image quality.

The images will be jpegs.

Thanks for any help.
Craig.

what are you using to compress the images? PS, FW, gimp??

it's just getting the balance right between size and quality using the preview window. making the images slightly smaller with some judicious cropping is also an option

what are the images anyway? why so large and are they photos or...?

you can also use something like http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/

Smushit is a good one. I generally go for PS "save for the web" and then play with the different sizes and qualities until I find the combination that works and carries the least weight for it's purpose.

if you have more then one image loading on a page - you can spread the accross different domains and they will download faster - see firefox page speed analyser
