Jumping in on this older post because I've been thinking about the same thing. In my experience, once your bike hits around $2000, home insurance often doesn't cut it. The limits and exclusions can be brutal. I'd consider specialist insurance for theft away from home and damage. What’s your bike worth?

For me the tipping point is when your bike plus gear is worth more than your home policy's single-item limit, which is often only a few thousand. I have my race bike covered at https://sundaysinsurance.co.uk/bicycle-insurance because it includes theft away from home, accidental damage and transport on a car rack. That coverage is hard to get from a standard home policy
