How do Social Media sites handle images?

Hey all,

Question for those that may know... How do social media sites such as facebook and pinterest handle their images?

I am in the process of building a small community site that allows artsy people to upload and share the creative things they design/make for either oohs and ahhs or to give inspiration to other viewers. My initial thought was to have a homepage similar to Pinterest where a compilation of new uploads would be listed with the ability to rate and comment.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how Pinterest handles their image uploads?
Do you think they give all users a private image directory, or do they have a single image directory with image names stored in the user database?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

As with any social media campaign not only should you reply on your own pictures, you should reach out liking and commenting on their photos too, especially if they mention your product or brand. As we have seen before customer service through social media can be a great way to retain a customer who is having a problem.
