How do I 'prepend' the address to a directory

Sorry for the unintuitive topic title, but I don't really know how to sum up what I am asking...

My site has a directory named 'pictures', and the thumbnail gallery is displayed using the address: www.mysite.com/pictures.xml

How would I go about making it accessible by using the address: www.pictures.mysite.com?

This is similar to Yahoo (to use an example) where you can go to www.yahoo.com, then click on Mail, which redirects you to a login screen...

Or you can use the address www.mail.yahoo.com, which will take you to the same login screen, saving the user the step of clicking on the Mail link.

Any nudges in the right direction will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Munky

Those are called sub-domains, and are created by way of your web hosting control panel.

Once you create a sub-domain, it should create a folder in your root directory with the same name.

For example, if you create the sub-domain sub.domain.com, then the directory for that sub-domain will be root/sub, where "root" is usually "www" or "public_html".

You can then upload the files to that directory as you would any normal site.
