Somebody I work with, who is based in the USA said Thanksgiving is bigger than Christmas in America, is that really true?

NO. Christmas is by far, our biggest Holiday

It depends on how you look at it but I'd say no, too. When they have the Christmas stuff out the day after Halloween (some before) it pretty much overshadows Thanksgiving altogether. We're not big on Christmas in this household... oh, we celebrate it and all that but the commercialism part of it is pretty much ignored here.
