Game ladder

I am looking for some advice on building a game ladder for a client. We use ning right now as the social networking base for the web site. So, we can play with some things that are already in ning. Basically, ning is kinda like a template. They have some powerful tools to make setting up the site very easy.

Although, we can code any part of the site from scratch also. So, I have not found something in ning that can let us easily set up a game ladder. Any advice on how to start this, where I can learn how to code this, etc?

I know gamebattles.com has a sample game ladder also we are using as a model to follow.

I will try those items mentioned. The project has slowed some, so I don't know where it is going unfortunately. But, thanks for the info.
