it honestly depends on the software, what your hosting provider allows, and a whole lot of other stuff. It's typically not a point and click installation and there are a number of steps that need to be taken to get it properly installed and configured. However, if it's a good software, there should be instructions included which will walk you through every step of the way.
It is usually straightforward.
1. setup a mysql database via your web hosting control panel.
2. edit the config file of the forum software to reflect your personal web hosting and site settings.
3. Upload all of the files to your web hosting server.
4. Do a web based install from your internet browser, which is usually just point and click as in following a few simple instructions and entering certain information.
The whole process from start to finish does not take very long.
