Definition of an "access point"

Can anyone tell me what an “access point” is with regards to external links on one’s website and provide some examples?

I’ve been searching for definitions and it seems that most of them are related to wireless technologies, which is not the context that I’m interested in. I’m more interested in the context of the term as it relates to marketing/website design.

cant say i've ever used the term myself. but a link is essentially an access point to another website. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

I'm essentially wanting to know if a banner ad on a website (linking to a different website) would be considered an “access point.”

An access point connects users to other users within the network and also can serve as the point of interconnection between the WLAN and a fixed wire network.
