Hey all,

I am trying to decide which CMS to go with, looking around at available plug-in/extensions of a calendar that we can use as a tool to put yearly fishing events and dates on that will be viewed by the public. (preferably free, but willing to pay -50 for the app)

The calendar will have to be able to allow links and html inside of a given day-
Also, we will need to link from outside of the site to given pages of the calendar..

A search function to search within the calendar would be a great bonus. -

currently leaning toward wordpress as the shell CMS- but open to any advice..

Thank ya'll so much for any help

There's over 14 pages of event/calendar plugins for wordpress. Have you looked? If so, which ones did you like?

Likewise for Joomla and event/calendar modules. Check them out and narrow down a list of candidates.

As stated there are some great, free plug-ins for all of those systems. If you are looking for something more robust I loved using Helios Calendar as a stand-alone or in conjunction with WP. Here is a demo:
http://www.atlantiscenters.com/calendar/events/

It has advanced search, a bunch of other features and an easy to skin CSS interface.

Actually there are lots of affordable calendar around and sometimes it cost nothing but expect to have minimalistic design and limited function compared to that have tags (price). You might like this KoolCalendar but probably you need to purchased it.
