You need to better your skills in the Graphics department first of all since that is the first thing people see when they go to your site and come up with an actual logo that will brand you. If this is the first thing someone sees when they go to your site they will turn away and not take you seriously.

How would you recommend I go about improving my skills in the Graphics department? Currently I am using GIMP since that is all I can afford.

good graphic design is not what program you use. but your brain and your eye.
a poor workman blames his tools, yet a good workman can use ANY tool...

Not blaming GIMP just didn't want people to refer me to Photoshop resources since I have no access to photoshop.

How did you guys go about improving i your graphical design? How long did it take you to reach an acceptable level?

Any tips on what would look good for my logo would be appreciated, specially where to find free small images that I could implement within my logo.

You can build resources by utilizing Google. So I would suggest Looking up the following:

-Free Fonts (dafont.com is a great place)

-Gimp Web design Tutorial

- Free Stocks (since google images are technically copyrighted because most of them you can't ask the owner if you can use them) I would suggest http://www.sxc.hu/ for free stocks.

- How design a logo in Gimp Tutorial

Go to Deviantart.com or google images and look over pages and pages of logos and get ideas from each of the logos you like and try to implement it into your own personal Logo.

Then do the same for designing a website.

As far as how long it takes, it takes time to learn each aspect and actually become good at it. Personally I see myself better at graphics and fair at designing and that is because I have always worked with graphics from drawing as a kid to computer graphics as an adult where I just started dabbling in web design several years ago for fun.

I know you weren't blaming gimp. its not a bad program.

my GD skills took a few years to develop, but when working with specialist GD's it really started to come together. Still wouldn't regard myself as one tho...still a long way to go. go with your gut intinct. when you design something be extremely critical of it, keep coming back to it, and if you still like it then its a winner.

also simplicity is the key.

the font is called rezland
http://www.dafont.com/rezland.font

took me ages to find it, and was quite funny that it sounded similar to my business name!

also that page is still in development, so apologies if it is a little confusing/lacking in content. but I was just really happy with the canvas script so have left it at that for the moment! the script doesnt work in IE but I'm happy with that...filters out all the IE users who wont even bother me because all they see is a black page...

That is a great way to look at it lol.. I hate having to accommodate for IE's crappiness :)

I worked on the site all afternoon/night and completely changed it(new logo included). Let me know what you think about it yeah?

Thanks for the font, I will try out that font tomorow when I start working on it again.

Updated website! Looks alot better IMO, still a bit amateurish but at least presentable. Any criticism is appreciated, just want to learn as much as I can.

Thanks for all your help guys, really keeps me focused and motivated when I see other people willing to help a begginer out.

do have the rights to use that background image on your site?

it looks nice

rollovers don't loko good because they are so dark on hover and the text jumps to the side too :(
bit too much text in caps too

a Little better but is that a copyright down in the right corner with web address? If you want a nice BG image go http://www.sxc.hu/ - everything there is free except the ads ones that have lines through them. If you go to http://www.fireproofgfx.com/martin.php you will see the images of each different page I made them and the BG's were from SXC.

Also your Logo still isn't really a logo rather text with a shine. Again look through http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=logos find stuff you like.
