It can be a difficult thing to calculate/predict, it my experience, it is very helpful.

You will need to list a little more information.

1. What is the purpose of your website? (is this for your web design company?)
2. What kind of phrases do you want to be found for?
3. What does your product cost on average?
4. What regions/areas to you want to target?

I have barely used that service. However, I started seeing the huge advantages of using all the excellent tools Google has to offer. You can sign-up on Google Webmaster Tools if you haven't done it, and place the Google Tab on iGoogle (or your Google home Page). There's gonna be a link to AdWords as well. It is simply NEAT. I say it is 1000% worth it. If you have any problems hit me up.

Answer: yes, it is for my web design company, the fact is that I don't have enough time to do SEO and honestly, I don't like to waste my money in Indian SEO companies.

2. What kind of phrases do you want to be found for?
Answer: Web Design, web develop, custom web design, etc

3. What does your product cost on average?
Answer: my prices are affordable considering the prices in the market

4. What regions/areas to you want to target?
Answer: USA, Dubai, Asia, Europe

2. I can tell you that we ran an Adwords campaign for the term "Web Design" in Illinois only and the cost per click was $5. Obliviously web design is one of the most competitive in Adwords. We stopped using “Web Design” because of its cost and went with more unique phrases that cost under $2.00.

3. Ok, let’s say $1,000 per job and we will use $5 as an average cost per click since your market is so broad. We’ll use a conversion rate of 1% which is pretty average. So 1 out of 100 people who clicked your ad purchased your services. With a budget of $1,000 you may get 200 clicks with 2 purchases. So in theory, you would recover your cost. These are just estimates though, Adwords is a lot of trial and error in the beginning months before you find a formula that works for you. You can always start with a smaller budget to test it out first before you decide to go full on.

4. This broad region is going to be tough. I would suggest going after a more local market because people are more comfortable working in person rather than over the phone.

Yeah, be more specific and cut your losses. There is no way you are going to show under Web Design for either adwords (unless you pay a fortune) or the search engine.

By specific, I mean either specialise in a type of design that is both popular but not well covered, create a niche with relevant keywords associated to it or your location. I have found great success from saying Sydney Web Design, and changing from Web Design to Web Site xxx is cheaper also, with still quite a few hits.

AdWords is such a big platform with so many experts that it's difficult sometimes to turn a profit.

You may want to consider hiring a "AdWords expert" to do the work for you. Even though they may take a comission, they may buy $500 worth of AdWords from your $1000 but have it be 10 or 20 times more effective.

All sort of depends, but I would really recommend at least looking into an expert to look into doing your AdWords for you.

In my experience running adwords is a highly intensive process with constant testing and revising, not only keywords and wording of the ads, but the placements of the ad blocks on your site too.
The returns are hard to predict, but as long as you have high enough margins, you should be able to make money off it.
