This forum seems decent, not as busy as some but by no means dead... There are some good threads in the web design topic.

For me I just kept redesigning my own web page until I got pretty good at it and I was competent enough to sell my skills. (I did also go to college for graphic design / web design). But mostly just persistance. Keep knocking long enough and someone will open the door.

I would recommend downloading a trial of Dreamweaver to put together you site using HTML. As far as hosting i don't know. You can build your site on your computer and then upload it when you're done with it as well. Hope this helps!

That's a pretty bad apples site! haha I think you will find problems because of the lack of text on the site, it's not super apparent what it is... Great graphics though.

I agree on the reflections thing. Also wider sites... or at least scaleable sites that seem to fill up the whole page. Full page flash sites... San serif!

Illustrator is generally easier on your computer since it is working with paths versus pixels... Unless of course you are just creating low resolution graphics for a website. The greatest advantage of illustrator over photoshop is the quality... Being that the graphics are vector they can be...

I would try to get at least 500, no less than that. You have to figure you are going to lose 30% to taxes... I've found if you undercharge clients will work you harder for revisions because they don't think you are a professional. That THEY are doing YOU a favor for hiring you, not the other way...
