well, turns out vb charges us poor europeans 17.5 % vat. which would bring the total for a vb owned license to 188 USD or 163.xx EUR. i was considering buying a license to play with vb and just maybe try my hands at a forum, but that makes me think long and hard about it. i pay enough taxes as it is!!!

vb is good but I've never found it so much better than phpbb2 that it justified the expense. There may even be some others out there worth considering since the last one I dealt with was a couple of years ago, except for someone else's vbulletin... which I'll never do again for free. I don't care to build forums personally. I'll help others work on theirs, I'll participate in some, but building one up for myself has never appealed to me... it's too much like work.

I think it is worth the money, though another option is to start using phpbb and then import to phpbb once the site gets traffic. I have done that in the past.

it's a shame vb does not support MS SQL like phpbb does. if i was to use phpbb, i would most likely use MS SQL for the backend being that i am on windows. should be more stable and offer better performance compared to MySQL on the windows box.

damn... looks like i am gonna need to learn php sooner or later after all... lol

I haven't, at least not fully. I just hack it when I need to make some changes. To learn php, you'd feel obligated to write the whole thing from scratch... I'd have to charge more for that.

nah, i am way to lazy to write something of that size from scratch. the way i do it in asp is i write smaller scripts here and there, like an image gallery or mailing list or user management or what ever. i write these in a manner they are all compatible with one another. all use the same database structure and so forth. so when i put a site together i just take the scripts i need and mesh them together.

i tried making my own forum a few years ago and it wasn't bad, but i never finished it. just lacked the motivation to keep going.

instead of finishing i would end up rewriting a lot of it and would only really accomplish very little new stuff prior to losing motivation again.

Someone going to delete the spammer links.

I don't have a clue as to why they think it's going to help. Such a waste of time and efforts!

I'd go with vBulletin it's what we've stuck with for the longest time.
