I dont know why people worry about the Google updates. If you do proper SEO then there is nothing to worry about.

Why?

It's unlikely to affect legitimate sites.
How do you know? Maybe 'legitimate' sites (whatever they are) benefit?

What's proper SEO? Don't Google updates inform 'proper SEO'?

I'd be kind of interested in at least keeping an eye out on Google updates. I understand your implicit point which I assume is 'let's just create great content' but Google is the one who decides to an extent what is 'great content' via its search results.

OK, got me there,... I should have added "negatively" in there :D

No they don't. "Proper" SEO is creating sites with 'real' content for real users and promoting them to real users, rather than creating pages according to the latest "algo busting formula". "Proper" SEO rides over the peaks and troughs of algo chasing formulas and the 'advise' doled out by "experts" so there is no need to monitor every single change that Google make, which is around two per day in a typical month.

Of course, I'm a big fan of writing great content which is aimed at benefiting users.

However, if Google was perfect there would be no need for SEO but it isn't. I think it is important to listen to Google and see what they think should be rewarded with higher rankings and, not slavishly follow it, but take it into account. Promoting content to real users involves Google.

As an example, Google themselves say 'use rich text snippets'. These can be used to enhance the appearance of your search result and potentially increase the number of click thrus to your website. Granted, if your website is shit it's a pretty pointless exercise, but if you have a great website then it's a little detail that makes sense.

No it doesn't.

There are MANY MANY ways to get your URLs in front of people and NONE of them include or even NEED Google. That is where you have SEO completely wrong, it is NOT about search engines it is about users of Search and Search (with a big 'S') encompasses EVERYTHING that has a search capability.

This forum for example has a search box, the short sighted idea that Search is only about Yahoo and Google is WAY, WAY off the mark, that may have been the case in 1994 but Search is now EVERYWHERE.

People search Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, hundred of blogs, "Bookmarking" sites etc. etc.

Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn, Pintrest etc. are NOT there for building links to one page on your site. You use them for interacting with YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE and if those links just happen to be useful for search engines THAT is a bonus!

Google and Yahoo referrals should be EXTRA to the direct traffic you get NOT the ONLY traffic you get.

Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, are social media channels. SEO, which is what I thought we were talking about involves search engines. BY DEFINITION.

You've now started to talk about other marketing channels. Great - but we were talking about SEO.

What I mean by proper seo is if you follow all the webmaster guidelines. Have good content that is shared and you are providing value with a natural link profile then you should have nothing to worry about.

People become obsessed with the latest Google Algorithm.

All SEO REALLY is is ensuring that your document are otimal for USERS and unless YOU do the marketing to get people 'talking' about your site URLs Google is NOT going to do it for you.

What you don't seem to be grasping is that optimisation is PART OF MARKETING your site and it's products or services NOT something that is seperate.

On October 21, 2014, Google released a new update to its search algorithm, entitled “Pirate 2.0”. The original Pirate update was released in August 2012 and was so named because it was designed to decrease the ranking of websites that offer or facilitate copyright infringement .

May I point out that it is now January 2016 so I don't think the originator of this thread no longer CARES about something that happened well over a year ago!!
