Marketing in the age of Google is THE only book you may ever need on Search Marketing, get the hardback edition because it will be a reference book that should stay on your desk.

I bought it when it came out and was happy to find out, that I had been doing it 'right' for the previous fifteen years or so :), but I did pick up on a few new ideas in the process of reading it.

SEO changes so often
Wrong, TRUE SEO hasn't changed since 1995, it's only the short sighted "rankings are everything", algo chasing type of 'SEO' that has to be re-invented every time Google changes anything, and in a typical year there are around 500 adjustments made, anyone of which could kill your so-called optimising.

"Inbound marketing" is just yet another stupid "buzz phrase" invented to confuse people and keep them under the impression that SEO is some kind of "black magic", and you need to study with the "Zen Masters" to understand what it all means, and quite frankly THAT is a complete and total load of bullshit!

The more you try and follow these "latest SEO technique", the less your website URLs are going to be 'optimal', because for every 'trick' that 'works' there are several highly experienced, highly qualified Google engineers working to stop it 'working'.

Just forget these stupid and pointless tricks and provide search engines with EXACTLY what the REALLY want from your websites.

I have started reading that book you mentioned Chris. Its very good. A friend of mine proved a point by creating a blog, wrote original content and done zero backlinking other than using his brand name to help increase his exposure so no targeted anchor text and it simply works.

Rankings dont mean anything if they dont convert its that simple. Focus on conversion and not on a keyword.

I wouldn't bother with any books if I were you - waste of time.

Focus on your website and provide visitors with exactly what they're looking for and in-turn you will perform much better in Google. Find a couple of great blogs and frequent them - things like MOZ and SEL are great starting points, although a lot of what they say should be taken with a grain of salt, but it'll help you to better understand the marketing landscape.
