Hi everyone, I have just started dabbling in the world of web design. I am using wordpress on go daddy for two sites, www.arsenalk9.com and www.armouroftheland.com
Sometimes when I use a search engine I get the arsenal k9 page waaaay in the inner pages. The other site wont even show up if I put the URL in the google search box. I would like to rank on the first page. I am using Yoast and most pages are green but a couple are yellow. Please help

That's how search engines work, THEY decide where your URL is going to be shown to users.

And what YOU see is NOT what anybody else is shown

I am using Yoast and most pages are green but a couple are yellow.
Whatever that means.

Have you done anything useful to actually promote your URLs?

I would like to rank on the first page
So would ten million other people.

Do you have any realistic goals for the URLs other than looking at pointless rankings???

Ok how about a goal to wind up at least on page 5 for www.arsenalk9.com , and maybe show up at all for the other? Or maybe get some traffic? Would that be more realistic? If I google www.armouroftheland.com in a search engine the site doesn't even come up. I use YOAST, a SEO plugin for wordpress. I would just like my sites to show up somewhere.
I have added my link to a few pages as well.

Rankings of ANY kind are NOT realistic
Traffic for simply being traffic is also pointless.

I use YOAST, a SEO plugin for wordpress.
And?????

I have added my link to a few pages as well.
Wow, like here for instance, in this thread?

So what you are basically saying is that you have a website and have no real idea why you even have a website.

Which shows in your documents as well, I've looked at both sites and only have a vague idea what either is actually about.

Really? So, you are telling me that from looking at both sites you can't tell that they are for a dog breeding/training business? Wow, I guess your vast knowledge in computers and web design left no room for social skills. I must apologize because unlike you, I have to start from the beginning in web design and was not born bearing that particular skill set.

Someone comes to this site looking for a little help and Web Design Jesus gets all high and mighty. Go ahead, play the role on the internet, cause I know for a fact that if push came to shove in real life you would have nothing to say, just avoid eye contact, pull your shirt down over your belly, turn and walk away.

Now that I have said all this I half expect something to go wrong with my sites, cause thats how you work right? Hack in and **** shit up so you aren't face to face with someone.

Anyway thanks for all your "help." If you need any advice on dog training I would be happy to walk you through it, step by step from the begining, without making you feel like a retard.

Arsenal,

I believe the issue here is there are thousands of threads we've already answered these questions to.

Navigate to the SEO section and read them. If you've read them and still have a genuine question then sure fire away.

But take this on if you may, Chris may be making you feel like a "retard", but he's speaking the truth, if you've only just started in Web Design, then he's not only giving you useful advice, but saving you countless wasted hours trying to acheive something that is not acheiveable.

Could it have been said not as narky, possibly, but it's usually like beating yourself over the head with a wet fish, it's not pleasant, and the OP usually doesn't get it, because some "SEO guru" has told them that this is the way to do it.

It works like this
Your website will, assuming you concentrate on the content and not "quick fix solutions" like link dropping and "yoast" generate genuine traffic.

If you focus on the SEO black magic, you'll get loads of traffic, predominately from useless russian spambots, telling you your website NEEDS more SEO, constantly, which if you follow up on, will generate even more traffic from even more useless bots, and will cost you a packet.

it'll probably end up with thousands of hits a day, but the genuine "hits" will still be the same.

If you want to get to the top in google, heres what you do.
Search your site 20 times a day.
Google will remember it eventually and place you at the top.
For you, but not for me.

Are you following?

Promote your site both online and offline
locally ideally.

and give it time. these things take time.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. Is there a reason why the one site doesn't even show up when I google the whole url?

When I "review" pages whether they are, PPC landing pages, 'home' pages, pages located from search or whatever, I do so as a 'real' person would, so I have to decide what the page is about in under TEN seconds, if I have to read for longer than that to see if it what I hope it is, your site has lost me as a possible conversion.
Visitors can judge a document's suitability in two or three seconds, you either have to catch their attention in that time or you could lose them forever.

Search [engine] 'friendly' isn't about the mechanics of a web document, it is a holistic view of the overall effect when a real visitor first lands on that URL

Twenty years of being involved in search marketing and web development has given me the experience to play that role in real life as well, (although the bit about the shirt is true these days).

Now that I have said all this I half expect something to go wrong with my sites, cause thats how you work right? Hack in and **** shit up so you aren't face to face with someone.
No your websites simply are not "well known" enough to make them a target for cyber vandals.
But you should remove the default themes (Twenty Ten, Eleven, etc.) from your server they are now being targeted as attack vectors because people think that they are 'harmless', unfortunately the "weak" permissions applied to them by default makes them vulnerable.

Anyway thanks for all your "help." If you need any advice on dog training I would be happy to walk you through it, step by step from the begining, without making you feel like a retard.

So you probably won't be needing a fact finding tour of why your chosen theme, as 'kewl' as it maybe, doesn't really make the site "Search friendly".

My seemingly "snarky" comments have one purpose, and that is to make you, and anybody else reading this thread to stop: And consider that maybe, just maybe all is not hunky-dory with installing a Wordpress "plugin" that instantly makes the document URLs irresistible for search engines and they WILL promptly propel the URLs to the top of the rankings for ever and for everyone.
