For Google et al it's more about the content and not crappy back links - hey if you can get a back link from a .gov.uk site nice one but otherwise keep putting stuff on your site which gives people a reason to link to it.

Not even re-mote-ly useful. UNLESS real people go to that URL looking for local government approved contractors.

Now THIS
otherwise keep putting stuff on your site which gives people a reason to link to it.
, is far, far, FAR more useful than any amount of links that YOU could ever get.

And please, when looking at links, understand that truly useful links are not from "a links page" to a root URL.

I agree with this guy and this is the right SEO process. backlinks from high quality websites and from .edu .gov etc are best, otherwise, adding content is the best way. Creating crappy backlinks is just a wastage of time.

I'll disagree with it being a complete waste of time. Link exchanges can be very beneficial depending on WHAT your work is about and what your visitor is looking for.

In my community (art and writing), link exchanges are prevalent because we know there is no way we alone can satisfy every desire of one person, much less several people, and it makes for a better overall experience if a person can browse through many things they like by just a few clicks. Many struggling writers have developed a good fanbase from a more popular artist they're friends with tossing out a quick "hey check this guy out" or an "I recommend his stuff!".

Not just hobbyists, professionals need a good network too. If you're swamped in orders, but know another business that does what you do and trust, you can divert your excess to them, and vice verse if they're an honest company. You both get work and the customer gets serviced. Win-win.

But adding just anybody for the sake of SEO, nah. You might look bad or crazy to the customers. You don't want your site to be a one-stop shop for income taxes, auto repair, and butt waxing. That's what Yellow Pages is for.

No they are NOT.

It has been stated categorically many times that .gov and .edu TLDs carry NO "special" 'value' for search engines.

Too sim-pli-stic. Google's penguin update didn't suddenly stop taking back-links into account when ranking sites. .Gov sites are, almost without exception, popular (as in high traffic) and authoritative so a back link from one of them would very likely be useful - with one proviso - it's a contextually relevant link.

NOT because they are .gov TLDs though but because they are Government URLs on Government websites

.gov is also reserved for the US Goverment, in the UK we have .gov.uk which is a TLD of .uk does also mean that .co.uk, .org.uk are the equal of .gov.uk because of the TLD?

The ONLY reason for links from .gov etc URLs being "more better" is the fact that any links from such URLs CANNOT be 'self placed' and therefore are 'editorial' in nature.

As usual it is not WHERE they are but WHAT they represent, eg: a recommendation or citation from a location that is more likely to be authoritative.

But on the other hand, would you REALLY want a link from a document that listed people with fraudulent tax claims, were convicted murders or that was a list of accused child molesters, simply because it was a .gov URL??????

.gov back links are still good though.

Yeah - it's like he says - they are good, not because they are .gov but because they have lots of links pointing at them.
