WordPress Noobie needing help

Hi All,

I come from dinosaur ages ago of Adobe Pagemill 2.0, and then Dreamweaver.

I never coded by hand, and my sites are now archaic.

I am ready to learn WordPress and need some help...

I have found a bunch of paid themes that I like and am curious in purchasing... but I don't quite understand how it works. I don't want to host the site through word press as I am looking to utilize a really fast host (for future SEO benefits)...

I am totally confused on how to start. Is WordPress an editor similar to dreamweaver? Where / how do I actually install and implement the theme?

Sorry ... totally brand new

You download WP form their site, then upload files to your web server (anywhere with php and sql support is ok), then you do simple installation by 3 steps. (follow instructions on wordpress.org). When you install WP, go to admin area, select appearance from the left menu, and then select "Themes". With basic installation, you have a choice of 2 or 3 free themes, and that is the place where you install new themes. When you purchase your theme, you need to upload it to web server, to wp-content/themes directory, and than activate it through your admin panel, in themes section. Hope this helps:)

I guess what I am confused about is, I don't see a .exe file anywhere to run... is this not an actual piece of software you run? is it all web based?

You do not need EXE, as it IS web based (uses PHP). I tried to explain to you how to use it. To use it on local computer, you need to install XAMMP or something. Just try it on some web host, it is simpler for a beginner. Upload files, install (on web server), go to admin panel... it is so simple everyone can use it.

If I buy a paid theme from themforest.com, do I get to use that theme multiple times on multiple sites, or is it locked in to a specific domain?

If you're using a PC you can download something like WampServer which will set up a Linux/Apache/Mysql/PHP localhost on your computer. Then install wordpress on your localhost/computer. I develop websites on my computer first and make them live after they're completed.

I use themeforest themes a lot and usually customize them to some extent. Just don't use it on multiple domains without buying an extra license for it. I wouldn't worry about changing the domain name later on, just don't use it on two different sites. Do your research well before purchasing a theme. I try to buy great themes from developers that support their products and update their themes.

Google search is good for problem solving and figuring out how to do things. Have fun.

Wordpress is not software that is installed and run off your PC, it is a bunch of files that are usually uploaded onto a server and edited in your web browser. That's the simplest way I can think of defining it lol.
