again, you are misinformed.
showgroups will show all members of usergroups that have the "show on showsgroups" setting to ON and I know that admin groups default this to ON. If a forum's administrator wants to hide the active admins by creating a second admin group and choosing not to show them on the showgroups pages then that is their prerogative; one however that I would never choose to do. I doubt that is the case though and since no proof has been given to me I shall choose to know only what I have seen (perceived). BTW, in case you are misinformed, moderators and super moderators are not admins.

I wonder... does it really matter if an admin quits a forum if the moderators are still keeping it running smoothly? I understand that admin presence does provide a certain peace of mind, but for matters of policing, are they really that important?

Let me ask you this: Would keep doing work with a corporation if the board of directors left the company for the managers and department leads to run? Don't get me wrong, I am not going to stop posting here if the moderators are doing a good job of policing, but there are many tasks involved with a forum that require admin access to complete.

If the admins are not active on the forum are they actively ensuring that their script versions stay up to date and compliant with new versions of server software that their host installs? What about patches released to prevent security breaches?

This forum is running on vBulletin 3.8.7 which was the last of version vBulletin 3 so there are no more updates.
Also vBulletin is a PAID licence forum, NOT a free "one click install" from Softaculous or Fantastico.

Being a past and present vBulletin board admin I am quite familiar with the licensing options, availability and requirements.
So are you saying that because this board has the latest 3.x build installed that the sever it is hosted on may never upgrade its compilations or that no security patches may need to be conducted?
If the server/site goes down do the moderators have access to the host to report/fix issues or shall we wait for the admin to login and check site functionality?
The vbulletin script is always kept up to date, there have been no recent security patches. I will make an effort to login more frequently though.

I couldn't agree more, we gave it a test drive and unstable, resource hog was the verdict, certainly not worth the cost of a licence. And that was on a VPS with VB4 only running on it, with only half a dozen people allowed access to the test setup.
Yes, I've read some of the less than complimentary comments on the VB forum.
