Hi

I recently launched my own web design web site, ( I work in IT but im trying to supplement my income with some work on the side), and I'm trying to figure out what are the best marketing strategies for a website like mine. I have played with my keywords and such, created a sitemap etc, but i'm kind of stuck with getting my name out there. getting links back to my website. Normally I would trade links with similar websites, but in this case is a little trickier because similar websites would in turn be competition, and people seem rather hesitant to exchange links.

what are your thoughts?

This is my website: GreenBot Design

Thanks for the link. that was a good read :)

It is, it has proven to be a lot harder than anything else I've done before. Yeah it's Wordpress. I love the flexibility and how search engine friendly it seems to be. I don't think I would use it for a large website or directory of some sort, but for smaller websites or something informational it's awesome.

The other thing I have been struggling with lately is search engine position. I'm not sure I quite understand how it works. I have been really careful about my keywords and what not, and since I started I have been monitoring my position in google. At first I wasnt on the first 1,000's results with the "web design orlando" keywords, and then all of a sudden I was on page 12.

Then I moved on to page 9. which is still not ideal but it's good progress I believe. However, I checked last night to see where I was, and I wasn't in the first 1,000's again?

I haven't changed anything, so I don't know why I dropped so low all of a sudden.

Its not as flexible as you think - It is easy to use but when you want to start adding things in on sidebars I usually find you have hard code these in. - It isnt a proper CMS but a blogging platform. Ok for websites which dont require much flexibilty.

As far as marketing you website goes I would start off locally, magazines, word of mouth, local forums, newspapers directories. Set realistic targets with longer tail keywords. And keep at it.

Remember you are not the only one who is targeting that particular key term. It is always necessary you do SEO on daily basis if you want to see a steady increase on your ranking. What SEO methods are you doing currently?

Do a lot of study on offpage SEO and it should help you in rankings.

Just be consistent in doing SEO. Remember that your competitors also aims to be on top.

Networking is perhaps the most commonly used approach by small business owners. However, it is often poorly executed. Many people attend a networking function and take the wrong approach by trying to meet as many people as they can.
