Photoshop or Illustrator

Really depends on what type of design you are doing. Illustrator is a very powerful app, and has a lot of potential, geared almost entirely to print-based design.
I use PS more than anything, love it.

Well there's a difference between "Which program do you prefer to use," and "Which is the most popular graphic design program?" The former demands a subjective answer, and the latter an objective one.
I voted Illustrator. I use photoshop mostly for resizing, cropping, and optimizing images before I put them on sites. If I'm creating any graphics, I enjoy Illustrator.
They really shouldn't be compared though. They're meant for two different things, though some uses may overlap.

Yep, Illustrator is for vector art and Photoshop is better at raster art, although each can be used the other way. I find Photoshop much more intuitive, so I use Photoshop over Illustrator every chance I get. Even when vector art is required, depending on the project, I prefer to design in Photoshop and then trace my final product in Illustrator.
I hired a designer who was very competent in Illustrator 10 and preferred it. But when I sat her down at her work station here with Illustrator CS4, she was 95% lost. Almost a year later, she still hasn't reached a comfort level with Illustrator CS4, but she picked up Photoshop CS4 with no trouble!

It's very much dependent on the type of graphic work that you're doing.
When using photoshop, you are creating raster graphics that are set in a certain amount of pixels (resolution), and are therefore not suited to enlarging due to 'pixellation'. It's perfectly suited to raster graphics like photos etc.
Illustrator on the other hand creates vector images, where the lines, shapes, fills and strokes are stored as a mathematical formula. For this reason, vector images are suited to creating graphics that could require resizing/scaling, as they don't pixellate and lose quality at any size. Typical uses would be logos.
For these reasons, I don't think that there is an 'either or' answer. For anyone that is serious about graphic design, both a vector and a raster graphics program should be part of your toolkit.

great answer but i prefer photoshop!
I use both programs on a daily basis, and they both provide unique abilities.
There is no better, because, anyone who use those two knows that they are quite different.
I usually draw everything in illustrator, make logos there, and print design, while I use Photoshop for web design, retouching pictures and drawing some art in spare time.
most of the times I combine those 2, and that really is the biggest power you can get.

I use Photoshop the most when creating websites so I picked Photoshop since I'm more comfortable with it.
Illustrator is more for vector art to create logos and your own vector graphics. It has great tools but I don't find myself always using it. Its good for originality.

I'm definitely agree with you. Photoshop can do what Illustrator does and more. Illustrator is one part of Photoshop, and made to be easier to make Logos and Icons.
