If you're learning web design with a view to doing it as a job then it's probably best to use industry standard tools like Adobe's Web Suite. If you're looking at design rather than coding then Fireworks or Photoshop would be a good start. For coding you should look at Dreamweaver although I'd advise getting a thorough understanding of html and css first so that you don't have to rely on Dreamweaver to write code for you. To add further enhancements like animation, advanced interface elements etc you should look at Flash.

In all cases though it's not as easy as finding the right tool. Good design is not about tools but about having good ideas which can then be realised by using certain tools. Take a look at sites you like and try and deconstruct the elements that make them work visually. Maybe look at grid layouts and colour theory. Then get your ideas down using a pen and paper before starting up your computer.

Look into getting an IE Tester. IE is the bane of designers. I don't know where I heard it but I once heard an experienced designer say .. "Design for Firefox and fix for Internet Explorer".

Either way, cross browser compatibility is a big deal.

Make sure you download a version of all the major browsers. And test your site in each. You can check browser statistics here

I hope that helps you out.

If you want to make better and attractive websites you should really have a good sense of Graphic Design. If you don't have this, no program will make attractive websites for you.

I would invest in the Adobe Creative Suite which encompasses basically everything you will need to design for the web.

The Adobe Suite is the best software available, but it does cost a deceny amount (work every penny though). They have free trials on their website, so you can see what you are going to get prior to buying.

Hi,

I suggest you to first start with Dreamweaver, as this is a popular tool which is used by every one for creating a web site. else it is important to learn HTML and PHP which is used for creating web site.

As most of the web sites are created by using HTML which is the basic requirement.

Thanks!!:)

Many, many cool tricks can be pulled of with jQuery. Alot of them are SEO friendly as well. The article linked here touches a bit on how jQuery can help with SEO problems often associated with JavaScript.

Its all about creativity

Website designing is all about being creative with the tools. I know designers who work wonders with simple applications like Notepad and Paint. As far as commercial tools are concerned you can use Dreamweaver for coding as other respected members have suggested above.
