Hello, My name is James. I'm new too the forum, so Hello!

Anyway, I've been Web designing for Several months and I am getting no-where with it. I want to start doing Graphic design, instead of using my own codes all the time. I've had a look at some layouts on here, and they look pretty good. Where can I start of? What Program can I use? and Where can I get any tutorials?

Thank you, James.

Welcome to the world of GFX design then James. :)

First off, for a newbie GFX program I suggest GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/

GIMP is pretty much a free mockup of Adobe's Photoshop program [which costs a few hundred dollars].

After that, I suggest doing search on google for free graphics tutorials. :)

Hope this helps you.

Thank you for the reply, But I've used Photoshop before, I've actually got the whole package. So I'm pretty use to it.

So, I basicly need to go through some Tutorials, And would I need to learn HTML/PHP/Java in order to design a website?

Start w/ learning the client side first- html & javascript (not java)
After you've got that down you can make your site more dynamic by pulling info from databases with php.
Check out a list apart & 456 berea street for some tutorials- because you do need to know code to design websites.

I agree with others, focus on the client side first. Javascript is good to know and very helpful, but not essential. The BIG ones are HTML and CSS. Becoming proficient with these two languages is a must. As far as learning, I would start with W3schools. Search CSS and HTML.

Don't build websites with TABLES. They are not designed for that. Their purpose is for tabular data (like a pricing matrix, or like there of). Take the time to learn how to position DIVs, ULs, SPANs with CSS. You will thank yourself in the end.

Feel free to ask questions, good luck.

If you want to learn and do graphic design, then I think the software that you can use is adobe Illustrator. For me, I would prefer illustrator rather than photoshop when it comes to a cooler look of graphics. But i don't know with you guys. That's just from my opinion. I also use photoshop but this software is more of the photo-editing stuff. Choose the Illustrator.

You can't really learn graphic design by using a program like illustrator or photoshop, they're just tools. Getting an idea on graphic design theory and principals might help.

Amen...to that!

Hey Jamez, sounds like you got a grip on how a website works which is much more than alot of people here on this forum. You just need to figure out how to incorporate the code and the graphics together. A great resource on the web is Lynda.com, although they come at a cost. I also agree wholeheartedly with the person quoted above that anyone can make a webpage or create a web presence. Without knowing design principles your page isn't going to amount to much. Some people have natural ability and some must be taught.

On that note, here is a good book, albeit i'm not crazy about all the books from this publisher but this one is great.

If you want to be just only a web designer... Firstly, your main purpose is to get information, how to make right html+css page from .PSD or AI, less - .CDR. Next you'll understand the whole web design process faster.

I'm thinking about majoring in graphic design. When you have a career in graphic design, do you have to illustrate and design on your own using the computer or can you use the help from the computer to design and illustrate?
Also, what kinds of careers are there for graphic design?
