What's the next trend in design online? Surely glassy buttons and gradient backgrounds isn't the end-of-the-road...

What styles do you all think is around the corner that'll start new trends?

Design in Web 2.0 is really good, but I'll say some general words - originality, lightness and simplicity of design stand high in users' and customers' esteem. Site where unique and awesome pictures and icons are used will draw attention!

Web67 isn't gunna like what i have to say but i think the use of PNG files and layering effects using shadows is gunna get bigger. I use this effect in most of my web sites and feel it makes the sites look more alive and less cold and codey. Goto my site and see what i mean, multilayering css, png transparency, and drop shadows. damn its all so sexy.

but this is why web67 is spinning in his desk chair. PNG files are widely un-supported by older browsers... they load em but getting them too look right is a crap shoot. It either appears to have a blue hue or it just seems discolored. BUT, PNG files aren't our cross-browser compatibility enemies, people who refuse to progress forward and update can still see the sexiness. How? use TweakPNG v1.2.1 to delete the gAMA chunk from your png files. download it in my section of my site and goto the forum to get an explanation as to how to use it.

But yea, clever use of repeating backgrounds can keep this kind of web design bandwidth friendly. And images are SEO friendly, yanno. just add an alt command for an extra area to cram your keywords. just be sure you don't spam or you will be punished by the google gods.

I agree on the reflections thing. Also wider sites... or at least scaleable sites that seem to fill up the whole page. Full page flash sites... San serif!

I hate long loading Flash sites too but we probably will see more of them, not sure. I think the trend is towards more white space, bigger fonts, better organized sites.

I love how you think web 2.0 is a type of design. Web 2.0 is the way the web is starting to work with social networking(facebook, mysapce) and you tube.(these sites are what web 2.0 is all about) Web 2.0 has nothing to do with Fancy buttons that looks like glass. That stupid reflection at the bottom of some pages is going to be removed because it has no purpose. Easier to use content management systems and social sites are the way of web 2.0. In design for new design it inst these arrow glass design shit that is the future that is the past. Web designs are going to be simple simple simple only what is needed on the page will be there. There shouldn't be anything that doesn't have a purpose. Designers are starting to put a lot more information in the footers to related content. You want your sites to be function over form not form over function. I agree that the layered effect is still popular but you do not need to use pngs to pull it off.

I disagree with that because i think sites are going to get more and more complicated and bigge. I think some small business web site will be computer generated code. I think small business web sites are going to get less complicated.

Certainly getting to higher resolutions and aiming at large displays should be on web designers to-do-lists. Also, progressing designs to ensure they are compatibly with new browsers that are to be released. :)

flash is the past and it is dead. Social web sites are the future. I think web masters need to focus on smaller mobile screens.

The next trend in web design is less flash, more mobile. Flash websites are exactly that, "flashy." They are bad for search engine indexing, and though it is true that Google and other search engines are getting markedly better at indexing flash sites, they will most likely never be able to fully index content served by flash.

Websites of the future are intuitive, well organized, and quickly navigable...with less stock photos, more interesting color palettes, and larger easy-to-read text. Sites are being built with content-concentric layouts, and with the end-user in mind.

Going back to a more simple, streamlined approach is better for everyone: designers, developers, users, and search engines alike.

Disagree?

Agreed. Or at least I hope you're right ;). Also: IE blows.
