Web Design and the brain

Do you know that we basically have two separate brains- the left and the right? The left and right brain are essentially physically separate.

Your left brain is linear, and thinks in terms of past and future. It is the logic side of your brain, and it thinks in language and details. The right side of your brain is caught up in the present - it thinks in pictures, and it learns by doing. This is the side of your brain that holds your creativity.

What would it take to build a website that stimulated both sides of the brain?A website that stimulates both sides of the brain can really help you. If somebody is reacting to you with 100% of their brain power, when your competition is only picking up a small fraction of their attention, you’re going to win every time.

*Interactivity (right side)
*Pictures that help your cause (right side)
*Good captions describing pictures (left side)
*Good offer (left side)
*Easy navigation (left side)
*Quality writing that excites you (right side)
*Stimulating colors (right side)

What do you think are some other thins that you could to to effect different sides of the brain and harness your users whole brain.

there are more articles like this at my blog www.mfinch.ca/blog/index.php

Have a website that delivers chocolate to you. Because no side of the brain is more powerful than the chocolate side.

You are taking the conversation of on a different tangent we are not talking about the services a web site offers but the fundamentals behind the design of a web site and what we can to to effect the brain in different words. IF you are not going to seriously participate in the conversation why post at ll.

I don't think stimulating both sides of the brain is necessary. I mean if someone needs both sides of their brain stimulated to stay, do you really want that person on your site? I don't think so because that person probably isn't interested in the content and is a waste of bandwidth.

Yah but different people use different parts of their brain some people are visual and some people are logical so you need to try and optimize the design of your page so you can keep the two different types of thinkers intersted.

But some people don't want the two different types of thinkers on their site. Personally I don't care for visual people/learners. They always strike me as lazy (always need crap pointed out to them or taught to them), therefore my mentality when designing a site is to ignore them. They're not wanted, so it's not loss on my end. But I do web design as a hobby a "professional" should have a different opinion cause they don't care about the quality of their visitors only the quantity (because that's how you make money).

For a hobbiest it inst important to design your site for all users because you want have the user base for it to make a difference. But because this is hobbies doesn't mean you shouldn't think about destining sites in different ways for different people. Most web designers and creatives are dominantly right brained so are most web designers lazy?

This is why most companies have a linear-thinking developer and a circular-thinking designer. Then your problem is not an issue.

Unless you are a vary small designer or a freelance designer. I think we should talk about what all we would need to do in order to stimulate both as a thinking exercise. Yah suz you should put up a poll

Well if you're looking for a good brain exercise, then creating a well-rounded website by yourself would be perfect. If you do the designing yourself and the coding yourself then you have no choice but to use both circular and linear logic. There aren't many people that can do this successfully though. A lot of programmers just use templates for their designs, and a lot of designers try to find scripts online. It's very hard to switch your brain between these two types of thinking.
