Ecommerce Websites.

Hi all,

I am a newbie looking for answers :)

I want to create a fairly low cost Ecommerce website..
I have been pouring over the "Oscommerce Templates" that there seems to be THOUSANDS of and I have to say that i HATE them!.. The layout and look of them are all similar and all unattractive!.
Does anyone know of an Online Store that I can create, where people can buy from it, pay via paypal etc and yet still look good?
I want to start a business from the ground up selling Mens fashion accessories, so I am looking for something dark and classy..

If anyone has any ideas, I would REALLY appreciate it!!

Thanks,

Hi Dani,

Starting an ecommerce site is never easy or cheap for that matter. Getting the website is one thing, implementing the payment is another.

I am not too familiar in terms of finding a template or ecommerce system... however, you COULD get a web designer to design a website with your vision in mind. And then get a programmer to implement it into OScommerce backbone.

For payment, the cheapest way is probably to use Paypal. There are no monthly fees, just a fixed transaction fee and a portion (4~5%?) of the transaction every time. The downside of this is that whenever someone wants to pay, they will be redirected to paypal's website. This is sometimes viewed as unprofessional and inconsistent in terms of the customer's online purchasing experience.

On the other and, if you want every part of the transaction to go through your site, then you will need to get a SSL certificate (security stuff) which can range between $15 ~ $500. You will then need an online merchant account. Generally, there will be a $25 ~ $60 monthly fee to accept credit cards online. On top of that, they will also have a fixed fee (around $0.29) and take a portion (2~4%) from each transaction.

Good luck on your business!
Let me know if you need help with the website. :)

oscommerce does have a lot of templates, and you could always pay to get a custom template done, but these things cost money. I would consider that once your site actually starts to generate revenue.

Look at zencart.

These are a couple of sites that use it, I've pulled them from the examples page:

http://www.seemore-s3.com/
http://www.adornedsoul.com/

It's open source, very flexible and completely customizable. It has paypal integration built in and you can move to having your own merchant ID and CC processing at a later date without having to start again from scratch.

So you can spend some time and/or money getting it to do the basics and build on it as time goes on.

It's written in PHP so you can customize it easily and keeping building/modifying it as your needs change.

I used OSCommerce once and I will definately use it as my E-commerce solution from now on. It's really easy to install and takes about a day to figure out the backside workings. Plus it has a plethora of modifications the allow it to do pretty much anything you would ever think a shopping cart would need to do. It has style modifications that allow you to setup a theme yourself and every modification provides step-by-step walk throughs to set it up. I made a shopping cart for a hawaiian golf shirts company using it. Worked out well.

I am kind of new to ecommerce myself but I have used auctioninc for the cart feature and it has worked out well. I just had to add their code for the buy buttons. It allows for shipping calculations, options, etc. and is only $5US per quarter or something ridiculously cheap like that.

I have used os commerce, zencart, and many others before, and I would definitely say that cubecart was the easiest to work with, in both the administration panel, and the template editing.
