Why .com extension?

.com is the most popular because most companies use it to portray a professionalism. It was also created for companies. You should be using the top level domain for your country if you are not using the .com for your business. only use appropriate domains for your web site .org is for organizations so don't use it as a personal or company web site.

Its not so much that its that popular anymore, now its more the fact that people know of it. It was originally created for companies and since there are more company websites as opposed to personal and other sites on the web then it became the most popular. Personally I prefer .org or .net, but .com is definitely better for a company as (mentioned above) it portrays professionalism and looks more business-like. :)

dotcom is most popular not only among webmasters, but from usual people on the net - this is the first TLD comes across the mind.

.com is an international TLD (domain extension), it one of the first extensions released, now days you can get extensions such as for example .com.au which is an Australian extension. Businesses in Australia will utilize this over a .com as it provides them with an address that users know is Australian and this may suit their business model better.

There is a huge demand for .com domains as it gives you and will always give you an international presence.

The original TLDs were developed to offer the user an idea of what the content of the site might be about.

.com = commercial (company/business related)
.net = network (an ISP, for example)
.org = non-profit organizations
.gov = government entities/agencies
.mil = military
.edu = school/university

As you can see, .com makes the most sense for businesses. This is why most companies preferred that TLD to begin with, and now it is considered the norm. Also, that is the only TLD "most" people know, or at least, the first one that comes to mind.

I think so because its look like a professional extension and most of the people use it .. Why do we see most of the forums with .com extensions only??

How .com started

In the beginning, the .com was meant for commercial organizations, .net for internet service providors, and .org for non-profit making organizations, so most of the companies started using .com, and it got popular.
