Where to Start?

Hi.

I'm new to web design but have designed my website from scratch a few months ago and had an idea for a redesign on one of the sections..

Basically, I'd like to do a 3x3 grid of pictures (in example below A-I) and when you "mouse over" (or click, if needed) one of the pictures, the full grid is replaced with a box (in example below J) containing a blog post associated with the picture.. Each picture would show a different box (with corresponding blog post).

ABC
DEF
GHI

becomes

N

The closest thing I can think is that it's kind of like a large tool tip, but I don't think you can put a webpage inside a tool tip.. and I'm not sure how to place a tool tip exactly over the grid even if it's not a webpage but just text and a picture instead..

Anyone know what this is called? Or any other suggestions to create a similar effect? I'm just not sure where to start..

Thank you so much!

PS. No links here because it's just an idea so far - nothing to show yet..
