Web designers linking to your site - free advertising

Hi there,

I have noticed, on may occasions, that web designers put their logo and a link to their site down the bottom of their clients websites. This seems like free advertising to me...

It seems a bit cheeky to me. Is this common for web developers to do? And can you ask to have it removed?
