Video processing software

I am currently using a free version of VideoPad to make short movies for YouTube.

Unfortunately the free version does not let me create files with certain extensions and the only ones available are .avi and .wmv

One of these formats results in very low quality images and the other one creates movies that are so big, they cannot be uploaded to YouTube; (if ever uploaded, they may be impossible to watch too).

Is there any good free software out there and what are the steps to be followed to preserve movie quality through the process of conversion?

Thanks websonalized!

I downloaded Windows Live Movie Maker. So far so good. Quality is better but files are bigger.

Now the other problem I detected is my movies do not come out the same size in all browsers and systems.

Sometimes there are two dark strips on the left and right side of the movie (the movie window is wider than the movie) or they are on the bottom and top (the window is taller than the movie).

Not sure how to deal with this issue and if there is a solution at all.
