Using Images On Web Sites

I'm currently designing a website for a course I'm doing and was wondering if all the images that can be searched for on Google are royalty free. Am I able to use any of the images without references where they came from

I don't think you can make that assumption. You could search google and find the Nike Logo but that doesn't mean you can use it as you please. If you are looking for clipart / stock photos you are probably safer trying to find a site that offers they free, rather than assuming you can use anything on the net.

There are tons of free sites like:

http://www.dreamstime.com/free-results.php?searchby=free
for stock photos

http://openclipart.org/media/tags
isn't bad for clipart

Also check the license info on MS clipart, you may be able to use that and it's got a pretty extensive library....

Google indexes images just like it indexes web pages. As such, it is not okay to assume an image returned by a Google search is royalty free.

No, images found in Google are not all royalty free. Since google just searches images from websites and not from a royalty-free source then there is no guarantee that they are royalty-free.

Also, when searching on Google Images it does state that

Image may be scaled down and subject to copyright.
