Tips on making images "Googleable"?

Hi everyone. First timer here. I'm wondering what is the best way to ensure that Google is able to make my site's images show up when I go into Google Images. Is it the filename? The accompanying text in the site, tags? I'm not sure. I'll post my own site URL once it doesn't suck too bad. I get nervous around pros

simple getting your site indexed by google will get your images indexed as part of the site.

i'm aware of that, but what values must I employ in order to optimize the images? Is it the filenames? Alternate text? Text surrounding the image itself? Something else? This is what I'm unclear on.

i am not 100% sure, but i believe it is a mixture of the page content, page title and the images filename. where as the pages content carries the most weight. i don't believe the alt tag has any influence on this.
