Starting a forum Adivice Please

I want to start a local forum/ bullitan board.
Should I buy a templete shuck as this one? vBulletin ? what else is out there?
I am very novice at web design so what might take a great desinger a hour could take me all week.
plus I no little about php and there other one.

The other most popular forum software which is free is http://www.phpbb.com/ which also has a lot of styles templates to choose from.

If you're talking about a nonrevenue producing site or one that won't be pulling in much revenue, I'd suggest going with phpbb2. As Ian has provided the link for it I won't.
