Should I insist on Domain Certificate?

I've had a web site designed my a small web design company( two people). I need to pay £100.00 per year to host the site. When I asked for the Domain Certificate I was told dont worry they look after all that?

But surely if I dont have the certificate then I have no proof that the site belongs to me? If the web design business closes or perish the thought if the two people who run it die in a car crash- how will I be able to renew the Domain name, I dont even know where it is registered? any thoughts appreciated

I would insist on that information just for the reasons you stated. Trust issues aside, there are always contingencies. If you paid for the domain name, separately or as part of the whole deal, it's still yours.

People dont usually issue domain certificates, but you should make sure that your details appear on the domain whois records at a site like http://www.domainwhitepages.com/ Also make sure you have access to manage the domain via a control panel.

no that should be a simple process if the web design business co-operates in transferring ownership to you.

I've found this info in the Whois page-

Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com
Name Server: NS2.ACSDNS.NET
Name Server: NS1.ACSDNS.NET
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
EPP Status: clientDeleteProhibited
EPP Status: clientTransferProhibited
Updated Date: 31-Oct-2006
Creation Date: 31-Oct-2006
Expiration Date: 31-Oct-2007

will I have problems tranferring ownership because it says- 'Registrar-Lock' and ' EPP Status: clientDeleteProhibited
EPP Status: clientTransferProhibited'

thanks

The domain has to be unlocked in order to transfer. The lock prevents unauthorized transfers.
